The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) has named the Siding Extension Double-Track Project for CSX in Wells, Maine, its Small Project of the Year (projects less than $10 million). R.J. Corman Railroad Services will be presented the award at the NRC's annual conference in Marco Island, Florida, on January 8, 2025.
This project added a nearly six-mile siding between Wells and North Berwick, Maine, and will contribute to improved reliability and schedule flexibility for both the Amtrak Downeaster and CSX freight trains. It will eventually support the addition of a 6th daily Downeaster round-trip between Wells and Brunswick.
Located on the CSX New England Zone, the former Pan Am System, the project site presented a significant challenge for the materials-intensive project. R.J. Corman performed the work in a confined area with only three crossings and in conjunction with live train operations. Crews navigated CSX and Amtrak train schedules and completed the project in tight work windows while maintaining a strong safety record. This project team attributed its success to extensive planning, adaptability, and meticulous production tracking throughout its duration.
CSX Director of Construction Engineering North David C. Clark (P.E.) expressed his utmost satisfaction and appreciation for the exceptional services provided by R. J. Corman during the track construction project.
“This project, which entailed the construction of nearly 6 miles of siding between Wells, Maine, and North Berwick, Maine, demanded extensive project planning, adaptive strategies, and meticulous production tracking,” attested Clark. “R.J. Corman Railroad Services exhibited exceptional skill and dedication throughout the project. Their team adeptly managed the placement of over 18,000 ties and 32,000 track feet of rail, in addition to the stockpiling and distribution of over 22,000 tons of ballast.”
